Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros is a Awesome Fighting Game

Super Smash Bros. Melee is Nintendo's way to let its fans know that it cares about them. Although there are plenty of other franchises developer HAL could have worked on (like Kirby or EarthBound), Nintendo listened to all our screams for more Smash Bros. action and has brought back all its popular characters for a second cross-title bash.

The rules in Super Smash Bros. Melee are simple: throw your opponent off the stage and get a point for the "kill." The higher the damage percentage of any given player, the less chance of a recovery when being thrown off. But don't mistake the simple premise as meaning the game is easy to master. As a matter of fact, there is so much stuff in Super Smash Bros. Melee, it's easy to lose track of everything. That's where this guide comes in. Use the navigation at the top to check out helpful tips and info on all the different modes, characters, and stages.

Different Stages

Stage 1

As the name suggests, this level is based on Princess Toadstool's castle as seen in Super Mario 64 and Paper Mario, complete with stained glass window and red shingles. Naturally, the palace has undergone some remodeling for its GameCube debut. Princess Peach's Castle is made up of two sloping roofs and a tower in the middle. To add some variety to the otherwise straightforward setup, there is a floating platform on each side of the building that move up when you step on them. Note that due to the sloping rooftops, players cannot hang on to the edges of the stage. Switches: In addition to the standard two platforms, players can "summon" new stage elements by stepping on switches. The blue switch makes sloping platforms appear on the left and the right as well as a square block above the tower. The red switch makes platform extensions at the sides of the roof appear as well as blocks next to the lower tower portion and the green one creates two platforms next to the tip of the middle tower section and blocks on the sides.

Bullet Bill: Run for cover when Bullet Bill appears on the scene. This giant bullet will slowly move towards a portion of the castle's roof and explode on impact. Touching Bullet Bill isn't too bad -- you only take 8% damage, but if you stand in the middle of the explosion, you take almost 60% damage. Few players survive the impact.

Mushroom Kingdom

Self-scrolling battle stages are difficult if you don't know where the screen is going next, so make yourself familiar with the map below. The battle starts on top of the winged ship. The ship moves from the right to the left until it starts to sink. From there, the combatants have to make their way over countless platforms until they return to the ship.

One of the most confusing things about Rainbow Cruise is figuring out what platforms are solid and which ones you can drop through by tapping down hard. In addition to soft and hard platforms, there are also collapsing ones (golden/brown with circles in the middle) and swings. Basically, all platforms that are white with golden stars or striped black and white with stars are soft. You can tap down and drop through them without problems. However, checkered floor platforms, flying carpets and solid black platforms with stars are hard platforms. Even though you can jump on them, you can't drop through them. Remember this and you'll be a happier smash brother.

Ship: The ship itself is a great fighting stage. It makes us wish it was included as a non-scrolling stage as well. You can fight on the deck, the back cabin and on two platforms on the mast. Be careful when doing elaborate moves that involve vertical movement (such as Kirby's upper throw). If you perform these from the higher points of the ship, you will knock yourself out as the KO-zone at the top of the screen is rather close. The ship will being to sink once it arrives at the platform dock. Abandon ship -- but try to smack one of your opponents off to the right before you leave.

Swings: There are two moving platforms on this course. The first is a rotating board that only moves when stepped on. The other is a large swing that rocks back and forth. You can drop through the bottom of both swing elements.

Flying Carpets: The flying carpets are hard platforms, so you can't drop through them. True to their Mario heritage, the carpets won't move unless you step on them. If you jump off a carpet, it will stop, then flicker for a few seconds and finally disappear. If you stay on the carpet, it will take you past the swing to the next set of platforms. Once it arrives at its destination, it will flicker and disappear no matter what you do

This stage is of course based on Rare's Donkey Kong Country series. Super Smash Bros. players will recognize it as another level that has been recycled from the first game -- but there have been some major changes to the look and setup of the level that makes it unique. For one, instead of floating in the air, the new Kongo Jungle stage is actually suspended over a wild waterfall. The stage retains its three-level setup, but there is now also an extra stepping stone over to the right that you can use to save yourself from falling. And since nothing is better than making a surprise comeback from near death, HAL has also kept the barrel that moves right and left at the bottom of the stage.

Barrel Cannon: This barrel moves left and right below the platform and is primarily designed to help out Donkey Kong himself. Since DK doesn't have a true vertical recovery jump, he can use this barrel to get back on stage. The barrel will fire when you hit A -- just make sure the arrow is aiming into the right direction or you might accidentally take yourself out. The barrel will automatically fire if you haven't hit your button within five seconds. Note that the barrel acts just like a platform, so if you've used a recovery jump to get into it, you will have a new one after you get fired out of the barrel.

Klaptrap: This crazy crocodile appears from time to time and swims down the river snapping at players on the right or left side of the main platform. You've got to be very unlucky to actually get hit by this guy.

Logs: Watch for logs that float down the river. They will become lodged in the left wall of the waterfall and act as an additional platform you can stand on or hang on to. Don't get too comfortable, though: the log will fall after some time.

Jungle Japes

This 100% new Donkey Kong themed stage may look very wide, but the actual platforms you can fight on are exceedingly small. The middle portion of the stage is made up of a hut, complete with Cranky silhouette and old-fashioned lanterns. Above the large walkway is a smaller platform that comes in handy when you're trying to shield yourself from projectiles or thunder attacks from above. The two wooden piers at the sides are connected to the main platform with steps -- however, the stairways are just background detail. You can't actually stand on them. The platforms themselves are very small and close to the edge, which makes them the perfect KO points.

The River: The raging waters below the stage are Jungle Japes' only major interactive feature. Players that get thrown in the water don't automatically get KO-ed. They have the chance to jump out before the current carries them off to the left. However, it is very easy to mis-time your jump and end up getting stuck underneath the main platform. As a matter of fact, this will happen a lot to the weaker computer AI opponents. As a rule of thumb, remember that if you want to play it safe, fight on the right side of the stage.

Those are Just Some of the Stages im Not Going to list them all because there is to many and this would get way to long

Super Smash Bros. Melee is filled to the brim with trophies, unlockable characters and stages, and even hidden gameplay modes. If you're ready to unlock all the extra stuff just sit back and read on. A few tips before we get started:

1.) To rack up Vs. Matches easily simply play Stock matches with one life and set CPU or a friends handicap to one. It goes by as fast as Sudden Death.

2.) As cheap as it may feel, play the Adventure/Classic mode on Very Easy. It will save you a lot of time.

3.) If you want to unlock secrets faster, start a stock game and leave your game on over night. This will help you out in the "total playtime" department.

Stages Galore

SSB Melee has a lot of stages to select from. While the select screen only indicates you can unlock five there are actually more than that. Note that there is a certain random element to the unlocking of the first four stages. Sometimes, the first stage you unlock isn't Brinstar. If it didn't unlock at 50 matches, it will unlock at 100, 150, or 200.

Planet Zebes: Brinstar Depths (Metroid) -- Play 50 Vs. matches.
Eagleland: Fourside (Earthbound) -- Play 100 Vs. matches.
F-Zero Grand Prix: Big Blue (F-Zero) -- Play 150 Vs. matches.
Kanto Skies: Poké Floats (Pokémon) -- Play 200 Vs. matches.
Mushroom Kingdom II (Super Mario Bros. 2) -- Get Birdo or Pidgit trophy from Super Mario Bros. 2.
Superflat World: Flat Zone (Game & Watch) -- Unlock Mr. Game & Watch and defeat Classic mode with him.
Battlefield -- Defeat All-Star Mode (secret mode) with any character.
Final Destination -- Clear all 51 Event Matches.
Dream Land (Classic N64 Kirby Stage) -- Complete Target Test successfully with all 25 characters.
Yoshi's Island (Classic N64 Yoshi Stage) -- Hit 1,323 feet (or more) in the Homerun Contest with Yoshi.
Kongo Jungle (Classic N64 DK Stage) -- Finish 15-minute Melee with any character (Tip: use Donkey Kong with his down+B ground slap).
Random Stage Switch -- Unlock all secret stages (except for the classic N64 stages and Battlefield and Final Destination) to reveal a random stage switch. As soon as you start your melee from the character select screen the match will start. This means you don't have to waste time loading the stage select menu.

Hidden Characters

Naturally Super Smash Bros. Melee is filled with playable characters. There are 14 selectable as soon as you boot it up, but you'll find another 11 waiting for you to be unlocked for a total cast lineup of 25 characters. There are genuinely new characters as well as clones. Clones usually share the same moves and attacks as one of the main characters with some subtle adjustments. Apparently there are several ways of unlocking characters either via Vs. matches or single-player mode. Once the conditions are met, the secret character will appear and challenge you to a battle. Win the battle, and you get the character. Here's the ways to do it:

Jigglypuff -- Clear Adventure or Classic mode with any character or play Vs. more than 50 times.
Luigi -- Luigi's appearance depends entirely on your level time for the first Adventure mode level. The time stops the moment you jump the "flag" finish line at the end of the Mushroom Kingdom sidescrolling level. Look at your seconds counter and try to time it so that you get a "2" (as in Luigi, the #2 Mario Brother) in your seconds (like 22, 52, 24, etc). If you got it right, you will see Luigi appear over Princess Peach's Castle in Adventure mode during a cut-scene. Complete the Adventure and he will appear after the credits. Or: Play Vs. Mode more than 800 times.
Young Link (Clone of Link) -- Clear Classic or Adventure mode with 10 characters (two of which have to be Link and Zelda/Sheik) or complete 500 Vs. matches.
Dr. Mario (Clone of Mario) -- Clear Classic or Adventure mode with Mario without using continues (Tip: use Very Easy difficulty) or play more than 100 Vs. matches.
Ganondorf (Clone of Captain Falcon) -- Clear Event Match 29 or play more than 600 Vs. matches.
Pichu -- Clear 200 Vs. Matches, clear Event Match 37, or conquer Classic mode with Mewtwo.
Marth -- Use the original 14 characters at least once in Vs. or another regular mode, or play more than 400 Vs. matches.
Roy (Clone of Marth) -- Clear Classic Mode with Marth without using a continue or play more than 900 Vs. matches.
Falco (Clone of Fox) -- Clear 300 Vs. Matches or beat the 100-Man Melee.
Mewtwo -- Rack up 20:00 hours in Combined Vs. Play Time or play 700 Vs. matches.
Mr. Game & Watch -- Clear Target Test, Classic, or Adventure mode with all 24 characters. Or: play more than 1,000 Vs. matches.
Hidden Modes

There are several hidden modes of play hidden within the single-player mode as well as the options menu. Event Matches are a huge part of single-player and at first sight it appears there are only 30. However, as you unlock new characters and stages new Event challenges will be revealed.

Event Matches 31-39 -- You'll need to unlock Jigglypuff, Luigi, Dr. Mario, Falcon, and Young link on top of clearing the first 30 Event Matches.
Event Matches 40-50 -- Unlock all hidden characters and stages.
As a special treat there is an extra Event Match that allows you to unlock the special Sound Test feature in the options menu.

Event Match 51 -- Clear all previous events.
Sound Test -- Unlock every stage and character.
For die-hard players, there is also a hidden Score Display option:

Score Display -- Get a total of 5000 KOs and you will unlock this option that lets you see the players' scores during a match (instead of afterwards).
Finally there is a secret All-Star mode which sends you fighting all 25 characters in a gauntlet-type setup. You will have access to three heart recovery items, but no more so you'll have to ration your energy properly.

All-Star mode -- Unlock all 25 secret characters.
It should be noted that there are numerous hidden trophies that unlock randomly with your progress, so be sure to keep your Vs. Match count high and complete as much as possible if you're looking for more trophies.

Alternate Music

To listen to alternative music tracks on select stages press and hold either one of the two analog trigger buttons (L or R) when picking your stage. The following stages have alternate music tracks available:

Great Bay: Saria's Song
Hyrule Temple: Fire Emblem
Icicle Mountain: Balloon Fight
Big Blue: Mach Rider
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Bros. 3
Onett: Earthbound (2)
Pokemon Stadium: Pokemon Battle Theme
Mushroom Kingdoms I and II: Dr. Mario
Battlefield: Multi-Man Melee Theme
Final Destination: Alternate SSBM Theme
All-Star Mode

The All-Star Mode is unlocked once you have opened up all Smash Bros. Melee characters. This secret mode (available under 1-P Regular Match) pits you against all SSBM characters in a 13 round battle extravaganza. The catch? You only have one life and your damage carries over from battle to battle. Luckily, you receive three Heart Containers that you can use in between battles. Since each container cures 100% damage, you don't want to use them until your damage level is high. Also keep an eye out for trophies that appear here at random.

The order of characters and stages you will fight is different each time you play All-Star. However, you can see the order of your foes after the first battle. The icons in the upper left show you the next opponent. There are however a few constants:

Battles 1-5 are one-on-one fights
Battles 5-8 pit you against two fighters
Battles 9-12 are against three fighters
Battle 13 is always a fight against 25 Mr. Game & Watches
Your strategies going into the battle should be based on what character you play. And, if you've made it this far, you probably have a good idea on how to battle with most of your Smash Bros. stars. Once you beat battle 12, remember to use a Heart Container to get your damage down, then get ready for a 25-man smash-o-rama. Since your opponents are falling from above, try using upper smash moves. Don't jump around since it's easy to lose track of things amidst all these jumping Mr. Game & Watches and falling tools.

Whenever you beat the All-Star Mode, you get a third character trophy.

Call for Backup

Fox also has a cool easter egg maneuver that can only be pulled off on the Great Fox and Venom stages. Find yourself a safe spot where you won't immediately be attacked by an opponent, then rapidly press left, right, left, right on the digital pad. If you did it correctly, Fox will kneel down and call up his friends. Falco, Peppy and Slippy will then call in (their faces will appear at the bottom of the screen) and either give you useless advice or tell you to get out of the way as they're about to attack your opponent. Not a very useful move, but a cool thing to amaze your friends with nevertheless.

Interactive Credits

Whenever you beat a single-player mode, you are treated to Melee's interesting credit roll. You can control a cross hair icon with the analog stick and shoot the text with the A button. Whenever you hit something, details concerning the credit appear in the window in the lower right bottom. Each hit is also tallied and recorded. However, you don't get anything when you hit everything. It's just for fun and bragging rights. If you want to actually read the credits, use the B button to freeze frame the action and read the text by aligning the target and pressing B again. To resume the staff roll, press B when it's not aligned on any text. If you don't want to read or shoot anything, press the start button and the credit roll will go by really quickly.

Not So Random Names

When entering a name in the Tournament Mode, select the Random button in the lower right. Press the A button to bring up one of many random, yet Nintendo-related names. They include characters from popular Nintendo franchises, like Ruto or Ash, console names, Nintendo staff names (like SHIG=Shigeru Miyamoto or KLOB for Ken Lobb), and all sorts of other stuff.

Japan-Only Trophies

Did you know that one of the trophies included in the Japanese version of SSBM is missing from the US game? But that's not the only change in the trophies department. HAL also changed the design of the proximity mine from the Japanese look (based on Perfect Dark) to a more traditional design that's reminiscent of GoldenEye and the first SSBM game. Finally, the Topi from Ice Climber in the Japanese version is based on the Famicom Disk System's "seal" design. The Topi in SSBM was changed to the more familiar "yeti" look.

Left: Tamagon from Demon World. Right: The Japanese PD proximity mine design.

Giant Kirby Battle
You can participate in a secret battle against Giant Kirby in Adventure Mode, complete with short cut-scene. The trick to making Giant Kirby come out is to beat the multi-Kirby battle in Stage 5 in 30 seconds or less. If you do this, Giant Kirby will appear as a mid-level boss of sorts.

Giga Bowser Battle
Giga Bowser doesn't only appear in the Event Match Mode. If you're playing the Adventure Mode on Normal difficulty or higher and you've made it to Bowser without using a continue (and your total time is less than 18 minutes), you will face this surprise enemy just when you thought you've knocked over the Bowser trophy and beaten the mode. The trophy will crumble and reveal the ultimate bad guy: Giga Bowser.

Crazy Hand Battle
There is also a secret final boss in the Classic Mode. If you thought dealing with one hand was bad, wait till you face the Master Hand's deranged cousin: Crazy Hand. To battle the Master Hand and Crazy Hand simultaneously in battle, play on Normal difficulty setting or higher and finish all 10 Classic stages in less than 10 minutes without using a single continue. Crazy Hand will then appear after you have taken away half of the Master Hand's hitpoints. You can also experience this battle in Event Match mode.

Earn More Coins
Did you know that the amount of coins you receive after a match is directly related to how often you "smash" the stick during battle? If you want to make easy money, enter the Adventure Mode and make your way all the way through the first level. But before you exit, stand on a secure platform and wiggle the control stick right and left "Decathlon" style. You don't even need to complete smash moves -- moving the stick all the way is enough to earn cash. When you exit and finish the stage you will receive a much higher number of coins. You can do this in any mode or on any level, but you get a lower amount of coins in Vs. Mode (unless all players do this trick at the same time).

Fun With Trophies
While going to the Collection screen to view your trophies, hold L and the trophies will be displayed in rows. Hold R and the trophies will be arranged in a circle. Hold Y and the trophies will be arranged in a triangle.

If you have Sound Test unlocked, note that the last music you listened to will also play while you view your trophies.

Peach's Quick Float
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Princess Peach is the ultimate throwback to Super Mario Bros. 2. Everything from plucking radishes from the ground to using her dress to float for long distances. Her dress is without a doubt one of her most useful tools. Knowing that Peach fanatics want to use it liberally, the developers of the game, HAL, have added in a quick float feature. Instead of having to jump full height to activate the float, you can press Down + X/Y at any time to start floating. Hold the button down to continue hovering. Use it while standing, and you can even hover inches above the ground if you like! A graceful girl indeed.

Pick Your Pose
You can select the pose your character strikes when you win a battle. Simply press B, X, or Y when the match ends. Each button corresponds to a specific winning pose.

Random Character Select
Super Smash Bros. Melee has a built-in random character select feature. Simply place your coin in one of the empty spaces on the selection screen (in the corner next to Pichu or on the opposite site). The game will automatically place your token on a random character.

Random Character Tournaments
Want to set up a more interesting tournament with your friends? When you're at the character/name setup screen in Tournament Melee mode, press the L and R buttons at the same time to change your character icon to Ditto (the shapeshifter of Pokemon fame). This will set that player's character selection to random. Note that this will only work in the Winner Out/Loser Out modes -- not the standard Tournament setting.

Start Battle as Sheik
Want to start a battle as Sheik, not as Zelda? Keep on holding down the A button when you pick Zelda on the character select screen. When the battle begins, you will hear the "unlock chime" from Legend of Zelda and you will start out as Sheik.

Easy Back From Select
Want to get back to the previous menu from the character select screen, but don't want to waste time going up and clicking on "back?" Here's a little shortcut: simply hold down the B button and the cancel command will be triggered after a second or so.
